Why OLGC?

Social Justice

Social Justice

Social Justice is the fair and just relation between the individual and society. This is measured by the  distribution of resources, wealth, opportunities and social privileges. At OLGC we are committed to building a compassionate global community where everyone’s rights are respected, protected and fulfilled.

We aim to make lasting change towards a socially just world and build the capacity of all of our students to understand the injustices in our world and to take action to help create greater equity. We do this through education, raising awareness and integrating Catholic Social Teachings throughout the curriculum.

OLGC Social Justice Projects

Each  term a designated year level will support a specific social justice project. We engage with guest speakers from a range of charitable organisations. We work in partnership with the Parish to support their work and maintain strong links.

In Term one we support Caritas through donations to Project Compassion. Students hold a cupcake stall to raise funds for Caritas.

In Term two we work with the Parish to support the Asylum seeker and Refugee Program. We donate goods to support refugee families living in the Parish. We hold a whole school Spelling Bee to raise awareness and funds for the Project.

We hold a Vinnies Winter Sleepout to raise awareness for the Homeless and deepen the students understanding of why some people become homeless and what we can do to help.

In Term three we collaborate with Genazzano to support the ‘Opening the Doors Project’. This organisation helps indigenous students to stay in school. Students from Genazzano who visited schools in the Kimberley share their experiences with our students. We take action to make a difference in the lives of many indigenous students.

In Term four we support the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. OLGC believes that every person has the right to experience the joy of receiving a gift at Christmas time.

Equal Rights for Everyone

We support these organisations because we believe that everyone has the right to:

  1. Healthy food

  2. A warm bed

  3. An education

  4. A safe home to live in

  5. A Christmas present

Through our Social Justice Program we are building empathy within our students to promote positive images of all people, to help create a culture of welcome throughout the community. At OLGC we encourage students to become leaders for justice at school and in our community, for both local and global change.
