Every year, Our Lady of Good Counsel Primary School arranges for a variety of activities to support the smooth transitioning into school and between the various year levels.
Kinder– Foundation Transition Program
The Kinder – Foundation Transition Program aims to facilitate the transition from kindergarten to school as smoothly as possible. Various activities are held to achieve this including three Storytime sessions, an Orientation Day and a Prep Family Welcoming Mass, prior to commencing school.
Storytime sessions are held in October & November where children are invited to attend a session at the school’s library, where one of the Prep teachers or support staff read a story and children complete an activity. This gives the children an opportunity to meet some of the teachers, other children and gain a sense of familiarity with the school. Parents may stay for these sessions or attend an information session with the Principal.
An information evening for parents is also held where various school personnel discuss different aspects of the school and its programs. A comprehensive school handbook is provided to all families to acquaint them with the various school procedures and programs.
Transition to Secondary School Program
The Transition to Secondary School Program involves all Year 6 students learning about life at secondary school. The sessions explore the excitement and wonderings at starting in a new school, issues of concern for students, peer relationships, goals, assertiveness, problem solving, decisions and choices, and the organisation of secondary schools. Each year ex-OLGC students in Year 7 from various secondary colleges return to share their experiences of secondary school. All Year 6 students spend a day at their future secondary school which may include assessment and activities organised by their prospective schools.
At the end of each school year, all students from Foundation to Year 5 participate in activities and lessons around new routines and new friends. They will also meet their new teacher for the following year and visit their new classroom. Students leaving OLGC at the end of Year 4 participate in activities organised by their prospective school.
